can you tile on to plasterboard without plastering first?

Yes you can, providing the plasterboard is robust enough to cope with the weight of the tiles and you use the right adhesive (i.e. well fixed and sturdy).


In preparation you should apply a diluted PVA solution to the plasterboard and leave to dry overnight, this gives the surface a tacky adhesion which will help the tiles to stick.

Yes, but it looks like the guys in the flat before me did that... a tiny gap in the grout led to some of the plaster board being wetted and over time washed away. Now a pain to fix!

Wickes DIY stores sell a material called AQUABOARD which you can fit to any wall & is impervious to water & is recommended for use in bathrooms / showers etc.
