I have cork tiles on the wall in my bathroom they have a coating on them of varnish, they have been there since 1979, i would like to paint over them what is best to do would gloss go over them do i have to prime etc. Help please.

If they have been varnished they won't need priming. Just wash them down with mild sugar soap, then when thoroughly dry, riub the surface over with medium grade glasspaper to create a good key for the paint. Remove the dust with a rag and apply one coat of undercoat and one coat of good quality gloss paint. You may need more than one undercoat if the colour change is extreme - or your brushwork is substandard ! Good luck
