I have wasps building a nest under some decking in the most inaccessible place in my garden. I only know there must be a nest because of the activity.

Before I call the pest folk out I'm going to try a spray but would like to know if anyone has been successful with any of the sprays on the market....or any other ideas please. I have hung an artificial nest with no joy.

We used a spray a few weeks ago. OH sprayed the nest in the evening, by the morning, the nest was finished.

When he comes in, I'll ask if he can remember what brand it was.
If you cant get to the nest try the wasp killer powder on the main entrance/exit to the nest. The wasps will be reluctant to pass through the dust..however the odd brave soul will, and take the dust into the nest. 24 hours later they should be gone.
If you can locate the entrance easily, apply a liberal dose of Nippon Ant Powder all round. Do this early whilst the wasps are out on buzzzzziness - but make sure you protect yourself as much as possible and keep windows/doors closed. Keep pets well away too. You may need to repeat the treatment but with any luck the wasps should be gone in a day or two.
Rentokil sell the spray and the powder.

Thanks, Rocky.....I can't get at this nest.....can't even see it so I will have to spray around the area they are using to access it, if I can. Will you ask him if this will work or do I have to spray the nest?...x

I've use Raid Wasp Nest Destroyer in the past to great success.
A couple of things to remember when using, most are a jet of death that foams on contact rather than the normal aerosol fly killer so a couple of squirts to check your aim is advisable.
Most important though in my opinion, make sure you have a clear escape route because those that survive the initial burst are out for revenge. From memory they return to the scene and get poisoned eventually but are very active up to that point.
had a huge nest under the shed one year. there was a large stand of raspberry canes next to the shed and the wasps had to hover over the canes before disappearing behind them, this is what got the wasps noticed. they never bothered us though, nor did they ever come in the house, so I left them to it. the neighbour did question us, "have you noticed there's an awful lot of wasps this year" - to which the answer was an innocent "nooo! really??"

Thank you for all your answers....really helpful. Rocky's recommendation says calling a professional is best if you can't get near the nest....I can't....it isn't even possible for me to spray through the decking.
There is less than a foot of ivy covered ground between the decking and the fence so I can't spray from a distance.

I will look at your suggestions, thank you...and then spray the gap with the foam....throw a large wet towel over the lot and run.....

If that fails then it's time for a professional..... x

Mushroom....I never kill wasps and have been trying to let them alone but today I can't go out into the garden....they are all around the doors and windows and on the patio...and they are little angry wasps...x
As douglas says make sure you have a clear run for cover, wasps are the most aggressive insects I've come across.
Gness, I'd get in a pro. Seriously, they are nasty little so and sos that will go mental if you get it wrong.

Plus I cant help thinking Gness + can of spray + wasps = what can possibly go wrong.........

Thanks, Ark...I made note of Doulas' advice and run I will.....I have always left wasps alone and they rarely bother me but these are especially aggressive for no reason..x

I have the council form online ready, BM but I was eager to go and buy something now.....I will make an outfit from a bin bag and old net curtains..... ;-)
He had to spray it right at the nest, it sort of suffocates it.
It was hanging from the inside of the shed roof, so it was very easy to get to.
If I was you, I'd get the pros out. Much safer.
Their ears are burning because they know you have been talking about them!
Well if you're spraying shaving foam on them, I've noticed they don't tend to like it. ;-)
I've come home to them everywhere on the top floor round the window, so I think there's a nest. Going to leave them be for the time being and keep the window shut but certainly a lot of em :(
Judging by the difficulty of getting at them properly, I would go for the pro approach. Your local council should be able to do the job for £50 - £60 (that usually includes a re-treat within 4 weeks if not successful).

Ark.....I had to stop using shaving foam....brought my chin out in a rash....
I have discovered why they are in their dozens around the back door...I left a dish of fruit in water to take down the garden for the hogs and forgot last night....stupid thing to leave at the door....wasps all over....so...

I sprayed Cif....well that's all I had.....onto it and now I have a dish full of dead wasps......that just leaves the nest but like you say...a pro is needed......but I know now that wasps dislike Cif.... :-)
Get a man in,Gness.
