I put the kettle on to make a coffee. Anyway something weird happened it wouldn't stop it kept on and on and on until I had to switch it off at the wall there was steam everywhere. Does this mean my kettle is knackered?

Are you sure the lid was completely closed. Put some cold water in and try again
It could mean the auto cut out thermostat has gone but the first thing I'd try is using a good descaler. Mine has had that problem and a descale cured it.
Is there a copy of the Daily Mail on the worktop?
Oh well...I've just bought a brand-new kettle that wouldn't START heating...push the little lever down, 1 second later - up it pops.
Returning it on Monday!
I thought the same as Margo...check the lid. Mine has done the same.
I replaced my last kettle for exactly that reason. Now I wonder if a descale would have helped.
Some helpful advice there, I think.
