For a more high-tech approach, I can recommend Cyber-clean....for phones, keyboards and lots more uses too.

I do the same as hc4361. If it's particularly mucky, I might use an airspray. Finally I clean the key surfaces with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits.

After that I get the vacuum out to clean the desk and floor to remove the crumbs etc ☺☺☺
If there's an immediate problem getting a key to respond - or stop responding due to sticking when pressed - and I'm too impatient to shutdown the computer, then it's the turn it over and slap it on the back technique. I've had paper clips fall out, doing this.

When the computer is already off:

Soft-bristled vacuum cleaner attachment to remove dust, pet hair etc.
Spray Dettox onto the cloth and wipe the keytops.

Spraying the keys directly should be harmless because the liquid would have to go around multiple corners to get inside where the circuitry is. However, liquid will pool in areas the cloth cannot reach and would probably leave unsightly deposits when it dries out, as well as being wasteful of the product.

Whatever you do dont use the hoover on it!

every now and then I remove all the keys, I take a photo of my keyboard first so I know where the keys belong. I then put all the keys in a bowl with detergent and give them a good wash, I then wipe the the rest down with a damp cloth with a little detergent before resembling. naturally it will need to be unplugged or batteries removed. My keyboard is a cordless Logitech and is 12 years old and still going strong!
