I'm desperate to find anybody who has had experience of this. One of our Jack Russell's, Molly, started with a hoarse, croaky bark on Thursday, oddly coupled with unstable back legs. We took her to the vets yesterday who gave her course of anti inflammatory tablets and painkillers, saying she may have a disc/ back problem. However she worsened and was wobbly and unsteady on all her legs.
A different vet today says the problem is most likely in her brain/ head and could be inflammation. He's given her steroids. I am devastated and of course have jumped to the worst conclusion.
I am just getting over a staphylococcal throat and chest infection myself.Could this be related ?

staphylococcus can be transmitted from humans to dogs but does not usually present with the symptoms you have described. I'd phone the vet.
If Molly is an older dog, she might have idiopathic vestibular disease. If the symptoms came on suddenly - it looks bad, but usually gets better on its own without little or no treatment - most vets recommend a wait and see approach. Your vet should do some bloodwork and blood pressure tests. I'm not a vet - just an animal lover. Good luck - I hope Molly gets well soon.
FAO-- LaughingGravy-----How is Molly now please? Have been thinking about her a lot. Sincerely Brenda.

Thankyou for your concern Brenda, we had to say a final nighty night to our little Molly because in the space of 3 days she lost the use of her legs, she couldn't bark or eat and drink, and wasn't in control of her bodily functions. The vets did everything they could but said it was a 'severe neurological event'
We are heartbroken, and also we have Molly's sister, Pepper, and they haven't had a moment apart in 10 years. It is SO upsetting seeing her looking for her, they were really close. We are doing everything we know how to help her through it. Again, thankyou Brenda, it means a lot to me x
