The people we bought our house from had electronic mouse deterrents in the out-buildings that made a clicking noise, so firstly are they effective and secondly, if so, where can we buy them? Any advice would be appreciated.

Not that effective get a moggy
Other than a cat, the best mouse deterrent we have found is to ensure that there is no food available for them.....not easy.
>>>where can we buy them?

From the same place as most other things of course!

ukbod2015, I don't want a cat.

ladyalex, these are out-buildings - there is no food around - but mice get their teeth into wiring and all sorts of things.

Thanks Chris. Very grateful to you.
Dont know .

However we had electronic ones which supposed to emit a sound , not pleasant to mice ( inaudible to humans ) .
Didn't work

They just seemed to have dissapeared ( touch wood ) - must have got fed up with the clutter in our house

These things are said to be rather ineffective but they still sell and some say what matters is whether the mice are there already when they are installed or whether the deterrents are retro-fitted, so to speak - the logic then put forward is that mice will not readily leave an already established base.

The clam-type modern snap-shut traps are cheap and in our experience quite good at catching rodents but it is what you use for bait that is very important. Cheese is as good as useless whereas animal fat and especially chocolate are as good as irresistible.
Its amazing what rodents will find edible, including some kinds of plastic, and if there is shelter (and warmth) they will bring their own food. I know its a nuisance but I have found the best deterrent is to disturb stuff on a regular basis. move things, sweep, bang and poke around with the broom handle and sprinkle traditional pepper dust around.
It was a rat (I think) that stashed half of a snake and the head of a cooked lobster behind my chest freezer!
Mice find fudge irresistible. A lump of fudge on an old-fashioned mousetrap has been known to catch three mice at a time. And fudge can be moulded onto the spike.
the problem with trapping (or poison) is that if the environment is still hospitable and accessible, more vermin will move in. If you make the environment inhospitable and/or inaccessible then the problem will literally "go away"
My OH says mice are very keen on peanut butter. He smears some on a bit of bread. He's caught many this way.

Don't know about the effectiveness of electronic deterrents (sorry).
I have used them for years. You can get them at Robert Dyas, and probably similar stores.
Forget cats, they usually cause the problem in the first place. Forget the sonic mouse deterrents, they rarely work, and when they do it is for a very limited time.

If you are just seeing light evidence of mice, get some break back traps and bait them with peanut butter or nutella. If you are seeing signs of a heavy infestation either call in a pest control company, or buy specific mouse poison, not a general rodenticide. Mice can be very difficult to get rid of unless you make a very determined and planned effort.
