I am aware that there are different companies who offer to clean your carpets for a price.

We are considering having our lounge carpet celaned as we have a dog and it is starting to get a bit grimy.

Can any Abers recommed what they think is the best type (eg chem dry, hot water extraction etc)

Also is there anyone who has had a bad experience / or is there anything I should be aware of - i've never done this before

Cheers

i used to work for HSS who hire out carpet cleaners for people to do themselves and picked up a lot of useless knowledge. This would definately be the cheapest option but there are lots of mistakes to be made. At least if you pay someone else you can blame them if it goes wrong. Firstly, depending on the material of the carpet the water cannot be much hotter than luke warm otherwise it will shrink. i've had many people crying in the shop because their beautiful shagpiles are now the size of a door mat...oops boss is coming...look busy..

We have always had our carpet cleaning service use the hot water extraction method. We have had excellent results on our off-white carpeting, even with tea and wine stains.

If you have young children about, let the service know. Our service uses mild chemicals because we have young children.

Between professional cleanings, mrs rampart likes to use OxiClean.

Good luck!

We have used the Rug Doctor on many occasions - this is excellent if you don't mind doing it yourself.  It is an industrial-type cleaner you can hire (ours is at our local Homebase) and it has  a jet wash (close up to the carpet) which is instantly sucked back up (all black and yukky)  I would thoroughly recommend it and have had no probs.
Rug Doctor - Try Focus DIY - Had excellent result, but I suppose it depends on your carpet type.
I have a bissell rug shampooer which does an excellent job for what it cost me. We have used chem dry twice, once in the US and once here and had the same excellent results and prompt polite service both times but they are not cheap
WOW, no-one on this thread knows what they're talking about

whys that then?
I used to work as a self-employed carpet/upholstery cleaner, and I'd go for a hot water/chemical extraction method - far better (IMO) then Chem-Dry and the likes - can take a few hrs for the carpet to dry out fully, but is always 100% effective and totally safe for kids/pets etc - HTH??
A Vax vacuum cleaner is a great unit, as you can wash your carpet with it, as well as dry vacuum. Well worth the purchase price.
