Do you know what sort of conifers they are, Juliacoomb? And how big are they now?  Trouble with  conifers (Leylandii I'm assuming), is that they don't grow new shoots from old wood. So if you cut them drastically, to below where they have a lot of green shoots, they'll just die. If you're wanting a hedge of, say, 10ft, and they look all brown and dead for the bottom 6ft, it's probably best to either leave it. If they're not as tall to start with, you might be able to get away with it - depending on the existing growth at the bottom.  We had a 14ft Leylandii hedge and cut the whole lot down and put a fence in instead. Trouble with Leylandiis is they're very vigorous and need to be at least 6ft high by 6ft wide. Hope that helps.

Sorry, I meant to say, "either leave it or cut it down altogether."
