I have a small broken pane of glass in an interior door. In everyone's experience, is it cheaper and easier to get glass cut to size and fix it myself, or would I be better getting a professional in?

It's fairly easy to do and, I would think, a lot cheaper.  Take a drawing (with measurements) to your local handyman store (he'll need to know exactly where you measured to on your drawing) and he'll tell you if safety glass is needed and provide the right amount of putty.
cheaper, yes, easier, no
If you do decide to DIY, make sure that when you come to hammer in the glazing sprigs (the little panel pins which hold the glass in place) you keep your pin hammer flat against the glass.  You can hold a piece of card against the pane to protect it but don't let it bounce off or you will crack the glass.  You may find it easier to use a woodworking chisel to actually hammer it in, but once again, keep it flat against the glass or card.
