I fancy painted floorboards in my spare room for a change.

Whats the best paint to use for this?

It only gets occasional use so doesn't have to be too hardwearing.

Are the floorboards varnished?
Question Author
No, they have always been carpeted.
You can go ahead & use an oil based primer & undercoat, finished off with some liquid gloss. Rub down & tack off before painting & between each coat of paint. It might be an idea to give it a good hoovering as well, to get out the dust between the floorboards.

ok, that's great, thanks
Keep some of the chosen paint for repairs as scuffed painted floors don't impress.
After a good clean, you could paint with anything you like... even ordinary emulsion, Millie.

The thing is to finish it with a super-hardwearing floor varnish such as Dulux Diamond, or Junckers "Strong".
