Friends of mine have found a lovely looking house they want to buy but it absolutely stinks of curry. What chance do they have of eliminating that smell, how would they go about that, and how long would it take?

Oh been there and decided not to buy the house. At the very least, you'd need to clean and repaint everywhere with special attention to the kitchen, and get all the carpets deep cleaned
Should imagine once the curry loving occupants have gone and you've decorated throughout and ripped up the carpets the smell will go.
When we first viewed this house the hall smelled of cat wee (welcome home...). Carpet up, wash floors and walls thoroughly, good air dry and job's done. You need to repeat the process wherever you think the curry smell was engendered, and don't forget that ceilings absorb odours too.
