I have no idea what the best AB catogory to place this question in is, so I'm tryin my luck here.

I have a low top pair of Lonsdale canvas trainers (think Converse) and one night out in a club has turned them from white to black.  My mum is adamant she wont allow them to be placed in the washing machine to be cleaned (scared I'll break the drum) but I kinda agree as the insole is red and I'm worried the colour will run.  So please, does anyone know of a product/oldwives tale that will clean the dirt out of the fabric???

I guess different washing machines are different but I've got the old canvas dunlop green flashes and they've had many a happy wash in my machine....The only other alternative I guess is to soak them in a hot bowel of water - maybe you could add one of those dylan's colour whiteners or something?  Check with the shop first to make sure they're safe to use with trainers as I'm no expert!!
there should be absolutely no problem sticking them in the washing machine (don't know about colour-running thing, I'm male). I've always washed all my canvas "jimmies" in the machine.

Hi Toothfairy, well if mum says no, then no it has to be I'm afraid, but I would chuck them in the washing machine myself if they're only canvas.

Try filling a bucket with hot water and dissolve some washing powder in it, leave your trainers to soak for a while, then scrub them with an old toothbrush where they're dirty. Rinse well and hang on the line to dry.

Fingers crossed for you ...

Wrap them in pillow case then in an old towl and shove them in the machine on a cool wash.
Sorry I should have also said when your mums out.
