town house/terrace

what is the definition of a town house and how is it different from a terrace?  i always thought that a town house was more than 2 stories but apparently thats not right

traditional terraced houses were referred to as 2up/2down, and i also thought a town house had 3 or more levels, i have wanted one for years!
