There's London Essex and there's the rest of Essex. The Jack the lads are London Essex; they, or their immediate ancestors, ended up in Essex having left the Eastern side of London proper and the old East End. Quite a number have migrated to Clacton-on-sea, but most are still close to London.

I've never been to Essex and the only experience of Essex men has been from the telly.

I'm pretty sure that they are not all like the cast of The Only Way is Essex though. They don't get parts on a programme like that because they live quite, mundane lives.

TOWIE isn't, strictly, Essex. Isn't a lot of it based around Chingford, London Borough of Waltham Forest? The protagonists sound as though they've never lived anywhere further East than Romford, London Borough of Havering. Mind, The Only Way is Saffron Walden, Essex, might not have the same appeal
