After completing an extension to this woman's property as is the usual custom £500 was held back so that if a fault occurred the builder could be recalled to rectify the work.

However after rectifying the work the money was not returned. Instead other small faults were found. This happened a number of times and in fact the architect says they are now just due to wear and tear.

What is the answer?

tell them you are going to sue in the small claims court for the balance plus costs.

Was the job carried out under Architect's supervision. A standard signed contract maybe?

is it usual to hold back £500 after a job is completed? All the people i've ever employed wanted payment when the job was completed

Usually stipulated in a contract, Beds. Around 2.5% retention for three months, but it is negotiable.

If there's no contract (written), but just a quotation, then it's voluntary.

Yes, architect supervised and signed it off when finished.

Well, in that case, he should also supervise and authorise eventual payment of the retention.
Although he's working for the owner, if he's authorised payment, then he should lean on the client to settle up.
A strong case for the Small Claims Court I would imagine, if common sense doesn't win out.
