As someone who is still considering whether to join facebook (many compelling reasons not to, but thre are a couple of reasons why I just might) I'm interested to know a) what this is, b) is it compulsory (it sounds like it's been forced upon you) c) can one avoid it if it's that bad?

Zebo - it's to do with Face Book, it is changing the layout of your 'page' to a different format called 'timeline' and it's not overly popular.

I like Timeline, I switched to it weeks ago, its cool, you just need a couple of days to get used to it.
