I have a border on right side of garden - its a raised border built from railway sleepers and soil is about 2 feet deep and a foot wide. This border is in sun all morning and in shade all afternoon. i need a few shrubs for it that have colourful flowers ideally, and flower for as long as possible. Or maybe even evergreen shrubs? TIA

lupins for good colour
lilacs ,lavenders...for great smell
fuscias are very easy to grow and give strong colour

hope this gives a few ideas..
why not go for evergreens that flower such as choisya, viburnum, vinca, hebe, Daphne, Convolvulus cneorum. Or some good foliage colour from Euonymus, Cinneraria, Brachyglottis, Aucuba,
Hydrangeas are very hardy and colourful.

Go for a mix of colour and foliage.....

Phormium bronze baby
Spirea goldflame
Fatsia japonica varigata
Some of the smaller Euphorbias
Philadelpus microphyllus
Choisya sundance
Geranium johnsons blue
any heathers for winter colour
a couple of nice dwarf conifers for elegance or foliage.
roses, loads and loads of roses.......

hammerman, some brilliant ones there!
As the bed is so narrow but reasonably deep how about a slightly odd suggestion a row of ballerina apple trees ( single stem dwarf varieties that grow well in containers) underplanted with dwarf lavender and patio type training roses or try using variegated lemon thyme, golden marjoram and purple sage for a productive bed that would smell wonderful too Avoid anything thorny if a little one will be toddling around at som point... also anything with long stiff pointy leaves
trailing not training
