I had a phone call today telling me that if I was on any sort of benefits (which I am). I am retired, I am eligible for loft insulation and cavity wall insulation if my property is suitable.

They said it was to do with the government scheme to insulate our homes better.

Has anyone else had this. I thought if you wanted anything done, you had to Apply to the council for it. I didn't realise anyone would get in touch with you.

They knew my name and address and said someone would be in touch to see if the property needed to have this work done and no cost.

Is this genuine do you think.

I received a brochure from an organisation called Warm-front stating that I might be eligible for a government backed grant of up to at that time £3,800 for up grading my heating. I did a bit of checking and the result was I got a full central heating system, Combi boiler, radiators, pipe work etc, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation. The quote for the...

Sounds like a scam to me. If you are entitled to a grant you should organise it yourself otherwise you could end up getting cr@p insulation and paying a fortune for a badly done job.

The above will give you an idea of whether you qualify or not, but it would be better for you to contact the Warm Front team rather than go with a cold calling Company.
We had ours done. FOC. Loft and walls last year. It was organised by eON.
My wife was briefly on jobseekers allowance at the time.
Nice and cosy now! It would have cost £1300.
We had ours done due to a phone call from them, so maybe not a scam afterall.
Yeah that's how we had ours done mjwman, Mr Boo was jobless for a few months. Sadly, we couldn't have the walls done as well- ahhhh well!
Call your local authority and ask whether the company concerned are approved.
The quote for the work was slightly higher then the grant so I got the whole lot done for just over £200.00p. I told my mate and by the time his application went through the grant had been raised nso he didn't have to pay any excess. If you've any doubts check with the council or your local CAB but I would definitely look into it
I had my walls done, or so I thought I had. They drilled the holes and pretended to put the stuff in but when we were having a new front door fitted we looked in to the cavity and there is only odd little bits. What a con..
All the work that we had done was checked by council inspectors. They went into the loft and checked the depth of loft insulation, checked and probed the cavities though you could see the insulation coming out at the top, all the plumbing associated gas and electrical work everything was checked and certified and copies of the certificates given to us to go into our records in case we want to sell the house. It also includes four years free yearly boiler service. Personally I couldn't fault the people who did the work.
Re arwyns post, you do have to be careful with cavity wall insulation particularly with older houses as the type of brick bonding system does not always leave a big enough cavity to insulate. The first house I owned was built in the 1920's and was "tied" by placing bricks at 90° across the main brick work every now and again with the result that there was virtually no cavity.
My house is woodframed, so is not suitalble for wall insulation.
My fathers house was done as my mother is terminally ill. They made a right mess of it. Not only did they leave the surplus rolls of loft insulation they didnt need up the loft, they filled the loft space with cavity wall insultation as they didnt realise the loft was singled bricked. I spent days hoovering it all out.

Thank you paddywak. I looked up Warm-front as I have an old boiler probably 19yrs old and have applied to see if I can get help with a combi. I will let you know what happens.

This is more important to me than loft insulation as I know I already have some but not sure if it meet with the requirements and I don't think I can have cavity insulation as I believe my house may be wood framed and brick.

Paddywak. I applied to Warmfront about the boiler and they came today to do a survey. Unfortunately for me your boiler has to be broken down before they will replace it but they have put me in the system and when it finally breaks down then I will get it replaced
