I learned (in my day) by having a straight edge on the fabric to the right hand sign - you hemmed a certain distance from the edge so you always had to keep the same distance in a straight line.

It comes with practice - if you hold the fabric taut as it comes out of the machine (e.g. behind it) that helps stop the fabric shifting about.

When I was at school we used to practice by sewing across lined paper, without cotton in the machine, till you got the hang of it.

If you go to the website www.thesewingforum.co.uk there are lots of links and interesting ideas.

I had graph paper suggested on here too! Good ideas and ive done alot tonighg and gettin better :0) x
I had to do the paper thing in sewing at school too (It wasn't a subject I chose BTW, but my school had a policy of swapping the traditional male/female classes occasionally, so even though I picked stuff like metal work and TD I had to take occasional lessons in classes like needlework and home economics as well)
Line the material up with markings on the footplate.
What lovely fabric!! It would make a fabulous quilt! Join a class and get going!
