A work colleague has posed this problem and we are all stumped.  He wants to build a hi-fi unit with a hinged lid which will on opening allow or cause the shelf on which the stereo sits to rise up.  I saw something like this a number of years ago with a sea chest which doubled as a drinks cabinet so such a device exists.  The question is where to get one?

You ask for a name, and click here to find a list of Ironmongers with a chance of there being a useful one near you. If you get stuck phone JD Beardmore in London (they are on the list) who will undoubtedly sort it out for you.
