hi i take it you know the principle of a turbo  charger. basiclly the ehaust gases turn a turnbine which in turn turns the impellar via a shaft connecting to turbine to the impellar. the VG system directs the exhaust gases to diffrent points on the turbine. in simple terms remember when you was a kid at the sea side you had the fans on sticks that blew in the wind ? when you blew on the outer tips the fan turned with easy, when you blew in the middle of the fan more puff was needed. thats how the VG turbo works. the vanes directs the exhaust gases to the outer tips to boost, when its nearly over bosting it directs it to the centre slowing its momentum. hope ths helps , try the fan trick !
