renting a house without going though a estate agent

Is there any way to do this in the colchester area? I know a familly that really want to move out but don't want to go though a estate agent.

read local papers and see whats there via a private Landlord - there is normally one day when property is in for rent

just give them a knock or put a note thru the door asking them to cut the middle men out.i did it for a couple myself
