Shouldn't you know this? Isn't it coved by the stuff you have to know to have a personal licence?

A personal licence doesn't cover any particular premises. (Unsurprisingly, it's a premises licence which does that). So your question is meaningless anyway.

Or, to put it another way, whoever told you that is talking utter b0ll0x!

However, some pub chains (or landlords of independent pubs) make it a rule that staff aren't allowed to drink in their pub, even when they're off-duty. They're entitled to make such rules but they've got nothing to do with the law.
