iPhone sets off shop alarms

I've recently inhereted an iPhone 3GS and it keeps setting off alarms in shops. I got followed by a security guard round house of fraser last week because I had set off so many alarms in town. I asked my sis in law if she had that problem with it and she didn't but I know it is my phone setting the alarms off. Anybody had this problem or heard of it and is there anything I could do to fix it? At the moment I have to turn my phone off every time i want to go into a shop.
