all the conifers in our garden have started to go brown and look half dead - in patches rather than creeping . I have noticed this on other peoples hedges too . What ever is it and can it be stopped before it kills them completely?

Have you trimmed it back too hard
Your neighbours are probably cheering.
There is a disease affecting conifers which is causing this problem, but as ubasses says it may be you have cut it back to far into the width, and if so it wont green-up again.

the trees are forming a low inisde the garden hedgerow, and are still fairly young, they have not been trimmed yet so it is nothing to do with them being cut back too hard. We don't have neighbours to offend Hopkirk, thank goodness, but would plant them anyway if they are for sale as they are ( or were) quick growing !!!!!! It looks like some sort of disease and will have to take a trip around the garden nurseries to see if they can shed some light on it . Thanks for your answers folks.
