Good morning all,

I just wondered if anyone knew how to check online to see who owns a property. Have you done so before? How did you do it?

Naturally you could try knocking on the door, but this place doesn't look like anyone would ever be in :)

All the best,

Offline options also appreciated if there's no way to find out online!
Electoral Roll?
Land registry, although I believe there's a small fee

What do you get from the land registry? Do you get a contact address, for example?
Yes, you get the name and address of the owner - of course the owner could have moved since the sale.
You also get details of any charges on the property such as a mortgage.
You can do a free search to see if this ever been registered with them ( not everything is) I recently searched for my friends grandfather's farm and it hasn't been which didn't help us at all. Search here:-

http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/public/property-ownership
make sure you use a proper link. thete are a lot of firms out there whose links look similar and who will chrge you for stuff you do for free at the proper site
There is also a register of properties that are rented out, something to do with landlord registration.

I used the Scottish version and it was fast, accurate and free.

Alas my brain is having a down-day and I can't remember what it was called. Maybe after caffeine...
