Should I sell it?

I've just bought a new car and need to offload the old one. It's getting old and is probably only worth about 500.

My problem is that it is not running particularly well at the moment although we have had it regularly serviced in the 3 years or so we've had it last one in January.
My wife reckons we should sell it anyway and let the buyer worry about it. If they don't get it checked out first it's their own fault, and anyway what do they expect for 500.

I'm a bit dubious, thinking that we should either get it fixed first or be honest about it (and probably not attract any buyers). What do you lot think?

I agree with andy - sell it "as seen" and then sit back and say "caveat emptor".  Oh - just don't lie.  In order to avoid being in trouble, don't lie.  Try to keep silent, and avoid them asking things.   That's fine.  But if you offer false information, or make a misrepresentation, then they can sue you for the money back.  And if it's private sale they'll know where you live... so don't sell it to a big scary lookin s0d who has hairy knuckles (unless you're bigger, scarier and with harier knuckles yourself!!) :-)

You could always try ebay!?

Sold as seen, can be seen by prior arrangement and collection only upon sale...

My neighbour did that - and had to re auction his guy cos the potential buyer who turned up to view his Lotus Elise was too fat to fit in the car!!!  How I WISH I'd seen that.

(Before anyone rants I'm laughing cos the guy was dumb, not cos he was fat.  I know I'm not a size 6... if you know what I mean!!!)
