I live in the ground floor of a four in a block tenament. The guttering above the flat diagonally up from me is leaking. Should the bill be split 4 ways or just the 2 flats directly below the gutters?

As the flat is leasehold you should contact the landlords management company. They are responsible for repairs to the external structure. The leaseholder will probably get a bill for 25% of the work. There may even be a repairs fund from the annual sevice charge.
You share the guttering like you all share the roof!

Graham, all the flats are owned independently and there's no factor or management company so we pay for everything ourselves.
As I said then. The roof and guttering keeps you ALL dry .. not just the top flat.
Pretty cheap job tho, I would have thought. Double-ladder to first floor .. replacement plastic fitting or section. No problem. Might just be a blocked pipe.
I was under the impression that all flats were leasehold these days.
I stand corrected.

Graham, I'm in Scotland and the flats were built about 1898, don't know if that makes a difference? Al, Saturday morning suit you if it's that simple? :OP You'll need to bring your own ladder though!! Thanks guys.
Just checked and there is such a thing as a freehold flat in England but they are very rare.
Don't know the Scotish law though.
In your case I'd agree with AlBags. Shared roof, shared gutter.
Alba .......... there must be some sort of legal agreement between you all I should think.
Anyway, as Al has said, it's normal for everyone to pay an equal share. It's the only fair way :o)
£60 for the job .. cash. I'll take the chance .. will bring some 1/2 round and square black plastic bits and bobs.
£350 for the travel costs (Northants!)
