Following a serious operation for stomach Ulcer, My Mother has lost the power to speak. She has not been diagnosed with stroke, and she has her full mental capacity, but she cannot formulate her words. Her medication has been checked and she has had numerous ct scans which show no sign of any abnormality. It was suggestd by one of the nurses that she could have possibly been starved of oxygen during the operation which could have caused this condition. We are currently involved in a full investigation re this matter, but I am wondering if anyone has experienced, or heard of anything similar, we are desperate to help her get her speech back. This condition started when she came around from anaesthetic

The commonest cause of this is by far away......a stroke.

His can only be excluded by the performance of a specialised CT scan with perfusion known as Perfusion CT.

If your mother has had this Perfusion CT scan and it was normal........then I cannot be of any further help.
You can suffer from a hoarse or lost voice after surgery because of the tubes they put down you but this does sound like a stroke or brain injury. Good luck with the investigation and I hope your mother recovers.
