We've got a wooden table. There is a white square on it which I assume was caused by something hot being placed on it. Is there any way to remove this?

I asked this question and someone recommended mayonnaise .. it worked ! Use it like furniture polish, it must be the oil in it that makes it work.
If it's solid wood it can be sanded down and re-finished if all else fails.
'white' mark more sounds like a water mark.
Make a paste with baking soda and a few drops of water. Rub into stain then wipe off... works well for us... (some mix the baking soda 50/50 with common white (not gel) toothpast and rub in)...
