What could be the cause of the unpleasant smell?

I have recently removed a rather worn carpet from my living room and removed the underlay, the floorboards are quite nice, so I've decided to sand and varnish them, although since I have removed the carpet a rather unpleasant fishy odour eminates from the room. At present I am scrubbing the floor, before sanding, but could it just be the smell of the old underlay, or dirt on the floorboards or worst of all something dead somewhere? Any suggestions appreciated

wash the floor with bleach first just in case smells are due to fungus or mildew.
if the previous tenants in the property had animals that urinated on the floor this could also cause the odour. You can buy a special cleaning solution which neutralises the smell (sorry, don't know the name of it though).
Im with pingping on this!!
bodies under the floorboards?
