No I am not talking about ghosts or anything but there is a constant high pitched whistle coming from the toilet cistern. Anybody know what it is and more importantly how do I get rid of it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

it is something to do with the water pressure i think, we had something similar. I think a valve was also changed. If you speak to any plumber they should be able to tell you on the phone as I think this is quite common. We found it was mainly during the night, something to do with the neighbour next door flushing alot in the night as he stayed up alot, I found this very odd for the reason!
It could be the valve that's controlled by the ballcock not closing completely. Try applying gentle upward pressure to the arm with the float attached and see if it helps. If it does then a slight downward bend in the arm should cure the problem.
I agree that it's likely to be the inlet valve, under high mains pressure.
To answer Camelia, mains pressure rises overnight. Problems often show up then.

Is the valve a traditional ballvalve arrangement?

Thank for your advices so far. Mr Builder we do not seem to have a traditional arrangement according to other half. No ballvalve! It is not worse at night it is the same all the time. Any advice would be gratefully received before we all start to suffer from toilet tinnitus!!!!
Id remove the pea that will silence it
I guess you have a modern "fill" valve, newbie. Rather like one of these.........

Simple replacement job if you fancy it. Otherwise partially dismantle the old one and play around with it.

Turn water off first though :o)
