Paint MDF floor that's under carpet?

Can I rip up this nasty carpet & paint the MDF flooring under it? If so, how do I prepare it & what kind of paint shud I use? Carpet must go (allergies) & need cheap fix.

I doubt it is MDF most likely chipboard.  Get some cheap laminate flooring and use that It will be easier to clean.
