digging up tree root

I have been trying for hours to dig up a big root in the garden, but to no avail. it just wont budge. any bright ideas to easen the horrible job?

move away from the root and dig out about 2' away from it all round and cut any peripheral root branches, work inward cutting as you go, then undercut with a spade if you can,, with the area of attachment reduces it should then be possible to lever the main bit out of the soil
Other than Rowanwitch`s idea,,,,,,Dynamite it.
