The ground for about two feet beneath my hawthorn hedge, and the lower part of the hedge itself are infested with masses of ivy. The strands are too numerous to permit cutting out. Is there a spray which I can use to kill this tortuous plant? Thanks.

About the only stuff now is SBK. Cut out/pull out as much as poss. then spray new growth regularly. It will die back eventually.
Not much can be done killing roots without infecting soil.
Scroll down a few posts
Buy pair of strong leather builers groves(there will be old thorns from the Hawthorn) set a day aside, get on your hands and knees and rip/cut/untangle/yank as much as you can - its often not as bad as it looks. There will be a few main rooted stems, but lot of the rooted bits will just pull out and clear as you go. When it starts to grow again, as said above, SBK or even regular doses of Roundup will kill the plant.
You got a big problem
My ivy was cut off at the roots 6 months ago and is still clinging to the wall and roof of my garage and is still as green as the hills you wouldnt believe it had no roots
waterbabe even if it was brown it would still be clinging - clinging is what it does best - pull it off unless you think it will damage any wall covering
Hi carrot99 if only it was that simple the next door neigbours let it get in the state it is in by not cutting it back for years although I kept asking them.
The back wall and roof of my garage where it has grown is to high for me to climb and the neighbours that let it get in the state it is are half my age and they're not up for it either .
Ha Ha wot you up to this weekend ( only joking)
