We have two large apple trees which dominate our garden. Wish to reduce their overall size without killing them off and wondered to what extent one can lop the main trunk and boughs.
We have them pollarded every year to avoid fruit but now need to be drastic!
Help appreciated

If you don't want to have any fruit there seems little point in keeping the trees unless you want them for structure or shade. You can probably be fairly drastic with them as long as you wait until all the leaves have fallen off at the end of autumn and the tree starts becoming dormant. However, it would be advisable to paint the sawn off exposed parts with some kind of protective treatment to avoid rot or disease setting in.
