Hi - I live in the midlands and have been lucky enough to get an allotment - I thought I would have to wait until next year so do not have anything prepared to plant - what can you suggest that I put in at this time of year - I have a row of autumn king carrot ! I think the land may be a bit acid as it has mares tail on it - have cleared about a third so far - any suggestions very much appreciated. Many thanks.

It's not too late to sow Swiss Chard and Spinach, although I'd try and avoid sowing it straight into hot dry ground in this heat and sow some in modules, planting out the seedlings later after we've hopefully had some rain. Most seeds sown in this heat simply wont germinate or will quickly die. The dreaded mares tail is a nightmare to erradicate so I would keep working on that as much as you can in the hope of getting a better start next spring.
Google `The Garden Helper` and scroll down for much information.
