I have some Hostas in pots that are beautiful every year. Trouble is, as they are so enormous they are very difficult to water in the summer so I would like to divide them, but I simply cannot get them out of the pots. They must be very rootbound as I noticed a root just below the soil.
Has anyone any idea how I can do this without breaking the pots as it looks at the moment as if this is my only alternative. Thank you

Hi glenbar, if it is a smooth sided pot slip a narrow, blade like object, long enough to reach the bottom but not absolutely necessary and work round the pot in a sawing motion until you get to where you started..If the pot is too large or heavy to lay on its side go around enough to loosen the soil ball from the pot side , if you can tilt it, do so and slip your fingers down the side and ease the rootball out.Don't worry unduly if you break some of the roots as most plants respond with renewed vigour to a bit of root pruning. If it is a fancy-shaped pot you will need to use a similar knifelike object but a bit bendier.

Thank you for replying. Have tried that, but I cant even get the knife down the side. However, now you tell me it wont hurt f i cut a few roots I shall be a bit more daring. Was wondering if perhaps I soaked the pot until the soil was soaking perhaps it may be easier, but as its so cold dont know if the plant will suffer. Cold and wet I dont think a good idea do you?
Assuming you live within a temperate climate I reckon you could do it now and wetting it thoroughly first should make it easier.
