I cannot seem to remove the blade from my petrol lawn mower to fit a new one, when turning the nut the blade just seems to spin round, any ideas how to prevent this to remove the blade

you need to stop the blade from turning while you turn the nut. If you can't hold it still just jam a piece of wood against it.

You may also need to use some WD40 if the nut is stuck.
In addition, I'm sure you already know, but it's imperative that you disconnect the spark plug wire before even trying to remove the blade. Turning the blade even a short distance can start or at least fire the engine, resulting in serious injury. Finally, when using Hawkwalk's good advice, be sure to keep track of the various washers that may be associated with the blade. Often, there are odd shaped washers of varying thickness that need to go back on in sequence to securely hold the blade. Good luck!
both the above are excellent advice, i use a short piece of metal piping that fits over one side of the blade and wedges itself against the ground when the machine is on it's side then slacken nut off to the right ( left hand thread), easiest way to this. best of luck
easiest way to do this even
