Dianthus Advice Needed

I have several Dianthus that have been happily growing for several years in a sunny ,south-west facing sloping border . They have finished flowering and I cut away the brown and dried foliage, they have some branches that are bare so I cut those back to leave about 2/3 inches of stem. Should I have done? Will they shoot from there.? t I have been watering in the hot weather, but they were not helped by my Cocker Spaniels deciding that it was just the place to sunbathe!!
How do I get them back to looking good . Thanks for any advice.
