It's just on some branches, others look fine. Pretty sure it wasn't frost and it's in a pot but not dried out as far as I know. I have checked for damage or beasties and can't see any. On the affected branches some leaves have shrivelled up other are just hanging limp. Anyone got any suggestions, I don't want to loose it it's getting to a nice size now.

I don't know the answer but I've had two do this to me over the years, both seemed to be perfectly healthy one year then shrivelled the next season and died over the winter.I also don't think it was anything to do with frost, water supply or wind damage. One I'd had for about ten years the other only two years. So I would be interested to hear any answers.
Sorry to be a harbinger of doom.
This is pretty common with the divided leaf acers. I've given up.

If you live anywhere near Manchester, buy another one from Bent's Garden Centre - they give a 5 year guarantee, and will replace any hardy plant that doesn't grow!

Oh doesn't sound too good then. I've another that's a very feathery leafed one which I would have thought would be more delicate but that's fine and looking very healthy. I did think it could possibly be something in the soil such as weevils but it seems odd it's only on some branches and other parts coming off the same main branch look fine too. Suppose I'll just have to wait and see.
They also like dappled shade, the leaves will shrivel and look burnt if to much sun gets on them.
That all depends on the variety Ratter some do perfectly well in full British sun especially if they are in the ground rather than in a pot.
I agree with all advice given but when you say it's in a pot is there sufficient drainage? Have you checked the roots haven't grown throught the holes & blocked them?
