Disposal of plasterboard

Can anyone explain what the problem is with disposal of plasterboard. Our local tips either won't take it or charge extra for it. As far as I can see gypsum is a natural product, and the paper coating should rot down quick enough in a landfill site.

Recent legislation changes mean that although it can still go to landfill, legally it has to be deposited separate to other waste. The gypsum is inert and will not break down which is possibly part of the problem.

I work for a construction company and we have to put ours in a separate skip.

Our local tip advised me on the QT to break it up small and put it in wheelie bin ( I did not have a lot, just off cuts) but I was a bit suprised.

at our local tip they claim it contains asbestos, particularly old artex from the 70s and 80s.
