Hardboard doors - fixing handles

I have anumber of internal doors which are the (cheap) hardboard faced ones. All have handles fitted by simply screwing into the hardboard covering.

The problem is that with use the screws have pulled themselves out and consequently the thread made in the hardbord too! Result handles are hanging off

Any suggestions as to if there are ways to refix them? Are there miniature versions of plasterboard toggle bolts? I understand there are some special Rawlplugs which might do but can't find these locally

you could polyurethane glue 4/5 mm thick hardboard laminate pieces same profile or bit bigger if so desired under the handle plate then re fix with self taping (threaded full length) screws you would most likly need longer connecting bar from local DIYhth Tez ED why is the tex so small can we have the old one back !!

Firstly, I would have thought that the door handles would have been screwed through the hardboard into the frame of the door. If so then you could remove handles, fill holes with wood glue, allow to set then re-fix handles in original location. Just make sure you don't shut doors with handles missing.

Possibility tez but would like as little as possible change to door

magicmerlin - handles are NOT screwed to frame but about 3 inch fro door edge where no frame - straight through to space between faces
