The council have said that it is condensation in my built in wardrobe and not damp that I have. (They used a machine to detect this....) Part of the wall is covered in black, can be wiped off. Advice given: was to use an oil based paint on the wall to stop this happening. My neighbours wardrobe/wall is fine. Any comments would be much appreciated.

The black stuff is more than likely a mould growth. Condensation problems in wardrobes is more often than not due to poor or lack of ventilation. If the doors are well fiting in will be necessary to put in ventilators or even some form of low heating. The condensation comes from the damp air in the bedroom when the doors are opened or even bathrooms and showers or baths in the vicinity. This damp air then condenses on colder walls.Perhaps the wardrobe is too full as well not allowing movement of air.
Hope this helps, good luck

I normally leave the bedroom window open a bit all the time and the wardrobe door is always kept open. I have just cleared a lot of clothes out, will keep an eye on it. Thanks for your reply.
If you have double-glazing, you will get condensation on cold nights (it's the water vapour from your breath- that you breath out all night, it condenses on cold surfaces like windows, chimney breasts, fitted wardrobes etc.) Do what I did, buy a DeHumidifier & let it run all night, ther'e not that noisy, so you sleep OK.- See how much of your breath has been captured in the morning.
