Rearranging a bathroom

I have just bought a new house, and the bathroom needs to be rearranged. At present the bath is under a sloping roof, meaning it is impossible to have a stand up shower put in. I would like to swap the bath to the other end of the room and move the toilet and sink to where the bath is.

Does anyone have an idea how big a job this is? How easy is it to relocate a waste pipe for the toilet like this? My partner and i are on a very limited budget, but we really do need to be able to put a shower in above the bath.

Any help much appreciated!

The thing you want to avoid above all else is having to move the main soil pipe (the vertical stack). This is expensive because it takes lots of time to do. What you can do (probably) is move the toilet to a new position where a soilpipe can run along horizontally (well, a slight slope!) into the existing stack. A soil pipe is 110mm in diameter so its easy to spot.

In general, other waste pipes (which also run into the same vertical stack) can be accommodated because they are only 32 or 40mm in diameter. Putting new copper or plastic water feed pipes in is a doddle, by contrast.

You really need to ask a few plumbers round and ask for a quote. Maybe wait for the cold weather to abate - they're out making money sorting out duff CH systems just now.

three points of advice, a mate just had a bathroom done & had these faults that i could see with my untrained eye.

make sure all waste pipes slope downwards!

make sure there is enough gap under the shower tray to enable work to be done if there's a fault. (leaky pipe etc)

make sure the shower unit ( if electric) is not in the line of fire from the shower head spray!

as builders mate said, get a few quotes, check credentials, ask friends/neighbours for recommendations. (my mate wishes he did!!!)
