cast iron grinding

Are there any particular problems when trying to grind cast iron?  Item in question is a fireplace which has some superfluous bits.

Cast iron can be readily ground using an appropriate stone wheel or sanding device.  Be sure to use eye protection, as with any grinding, and don't do it in the house since the sparks that come off are, at least briefly, quite hot.  Additionally, be aware, that thinner pieces of cast iron, such as decorative scrolling, don't have a lot of strength when flexxed, (bent form side to side) so don't put a lot of undue pressure on them...
