a decorator told me about this stuff you paint on varnished wood, so that you can repaint, without having to sand it all down. I can't remember what it's called though!

i think that's it, rowanwitch, thanks. when you watch the video on that link, you still have to sand down a bit first, and sand after!
I've got a wall full of wardrobes and drawers to do that someone has kindly given me, but they are varnished pine. It'll take me months!
it's "size"... hard to Google because the word has so many other meanings. But a DIY shop should know what you're after
sounds like everyone will tell you Not to do this but I just wash well with sugar soap and use a good undercoat and hope for the best
