Baptists were called "Baptist" because they baptised adult converts rather than children and babies. They were founded in the 16th century. They were among the first "non conformists" as they refused to conform their services to the Book of Common Prayer, which was used by the Church of England (Episcopalian). They based their philosophy on belief in personal salvation and good works, rather than being born into the state church as a given.

Methodism was founded by John Wesley in the mid 18th century, although initially it was a branch of the Church of England - John Wesley is said to have declared on his deathbed "I live and die a member of the Church of England". However, he did ordain ministers in his sect and after his death, the Methodist Church became several separate entities, which were not united until 1932 when the three main branches merged to form the Methodist Church as it is today.

I believe the main differences is their perception of what a religion should be about.

Gives some good background info to the foundation and beliefs of both.

Thanks both of you...This has certainly given me something to work on!

In addition to the excellen answers above:

In a Baptist church you are expected to be baptised (as an adult) before you become a church member (this is different from becomming a christian). In a Strict baptist church you have to be baptised (as an adult) to take communion/the lords supper.

The Methodist movement was more in reaction to the state of the C of E at that time.
