Morning folks ... nice early start today. Just one more to go on the above, which I can't work out for love nor money ....

11a Anglo Saxon layer of wood (4) a?p?n - is it "aspen" and if so, why, please?

A 'pen' is a female swan..a layer. Anglo Saxon...AS + pen looks OK. And Aspen is a tree

Many thanks, SandyRoe. However, that now makes my 2down wrong. I thought it was "ratch", but now the letters are:

r?t?p (toothed wheel found by rector at church) (5). Or is is "ratch" for definite and the 11a something else?
